How Bruce Lee viewed "concepts":
A Conversation with Sifu Dino...
Q. What is Jeet Kune Do?
A. The art, science and philosophy of combat according to the teachings of Bruce Lee.
Q. I have been to J.K.D schools where they teach many different arts, why doesn't your school do the same?
A. Great question. The points of difference are we teach Bruce Lee's martial art which is based on body mechanics and physics. It is not mixing martial arts and calling it J.K.D. As Bruce Lee stated hack away the unessential. Bruce Lee also did not believe in systems, so how can studying many different arts be J.K.D.
Q. Isn't J.K.D. taking the best of all martial arts and didn't Bruce Lee research many different systems?
A. It is true that Bruce Lee researched many different systems. It is important to have the other systems playbook, so that we can counter it. As long as we have the ability to kick, punch, trap and grapple in long, medium and close range and we understand the weapon this gives us totality in combat.
Q. I read somewhere that J.K.D. is outdated and they compared it to a 1967 corvette and the year 2000 corvette. The year 2000 corvette would be much better, what would your response be to that?
A, unfortunately, the person that made this comparison knows little of nothing about J.K.D. How can a system that is based on body mechanics and physics be outdated? Last time I looked a 1967 human was the same as a 2000 human. The person that made this statement is one who studies many different martial arts and calls it all J.K.D.
Q. What about the people that says that J.K.D. is old stuff and they are studying new arts?
A. If they have decided to study other art, that’s fine,
but if they study Kali, Thai Boxing, Savate, Silat and Grappling Arts and
they call that the new stuff maybe they should look at history and they
would know that these systems far outdates J.K.D.
Q. I went to a school and they told me J.K.D. doesn't exist, what Bruce Lee practiced was called Jun Fan Gung Fu and J.K.D. is just a concept. Does your academy believe this to be true?
A. Absolutely not. J.K.D. is the art that Bruce Lee practiced after 1966. In Dan Inosanto's book "The Art and Philosophy of Bruce Lee" on page 28 it is stated that: "Bruce Lee established the art of Jeet Kune Do in 1966. Jun Fan Gung Fu was looked upon as the art that Bruce Lee taught in Seattle and Oakland. JKD then is really a liberated form of Jun Fan, it encompasses much more."
Q. I've been told that JKD is modified Wing Chun, does your school believe this?
A. Absolutely not. Even though Bruce Lee study Wing Chun, when he started to develop JKD the stance, the footwork, the punching and the kicking our dramatically different than those of Wing Chun. Even the trapping is taught with a different premise that Wing Chun. With all these differences how can it be Wing Chun. Bruce Lee started that even through he owes a lot to Wing Chun, he found it to restricted for his personal expression.
Q. Have you been recognized as an instructor by the Bruce Lee Educational foundation?
A. Yes, and was the first person in the tri state area to receive this certification. Also NY Martial Arts Academy was the first school in the tri state area to teach JKD since 1985 and we are only school in the 5 boroughs that continues to teach according to the original teachings of Bruce Lee. As far as I know, no other school in NY has received authorization from the Bruce Lee Educational foundation to teach Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do.
Q. How often do I have to train to be proficient in J.K.D.?
A. The average person should train 2-3 hours per week to start receiving the benefits.
Q. How often am I allowed to train when I join your school?
A. Our school has unlimited attendance. J.K.D. classes are offered everyday and there are specialty classes offered at no extra cost.
Q. What do I have to do to get started?
A. Give us a call to setup your special introductory class,
have an instructor work with you personally. What are you waiting for? Give
us a call.
