At New York Martial Arts Academy students are given the opportunity to train
in Jeet Kune Do. We do not mix and match different
styles and still call it Jeet Kune Do. We believe at this academy that Jeet
Kune Do is not an idea, a strategy or a concept. We believe that JKD is the
art, science and philosophy of combat according to the research and development
of Bruce Lee.
In the JKD classes we cover long, medium and close range. The aspects that
we cover are kicking, punching, trapping and grappling. We are looking at
the most efficient manner to deal with these situations. This is why we also
offer specialty classes in kick boxing, trapping, JKD
open, footwork, and grappling classes.
At New York Martial Arts Academy, students train for various reasons such
as fun, fitness, self-defense and the desire to learn Bruce Lee's martial
art, with proper dedication our students are given the opportunity to receive
all these benefits.

- Jeet Kune Do (JKD)
-
As martial art, Jeet Kune Do is without doubt one of the
most functional, efficient, street-effective methods of fighting
ever developed. Indeed, if you want the most viable method of self-
defense to the threats you may encounter in today's streets, then
this is the martial art for you. You'll be pleased to know that
some of the world's greatest fighters and martial artists were students
of Bruce Lee's Art. Jeet Kune Do encompasses much more than
mere combative or technical fighting skill. It is a reality-based
program of self- development, offering you, the individual, a prescription
for personal growth, not only as a martial artist, but also as a
human being. Rather than seeking to fit you into a "cookie-cutter"
mold, Jeet Kune Do simply shares with you the "signposts
" to total self- development that were put forth by Bruce Lee, allowing
you to tap into the vast potential (in all areas of human development)
that you already possess. An approach to life as much as it is an
approach to self- defense, Jeet Kune Do can help free you
from your hang-ups and insecurities as well as providing a superior
method of total fitness, self-defense and peace of mind.
Self-defense is only one of the many facets of Jeet Kune
Do. If self-defense or hand-to-hand combat holds no appeal to you,
then you'll be pleased to know that Jeet Kune Do yields
plenty, of other facets that are so crucial to total health and
self-actualization. Jeet Kune Do will allow you to become
far more efficient, creative, and productive in whatever you are
doing.

- JKD Kick boxing Class
-
In these classes our students are given the opportunity to sharpen
their kicking and punching skills through various drills that will
prepare them for self-defense situations. A typical class will include
basic warm up, footwork, focus mitt work, kicking shield, thai pad
work, offensive/defensive mitts and understanding the basic principles
of evasion and interception. This class will also give you a better
understanding of what it is like to hit moving targets and the aerobic
fitness required to perform live rounds.

- JKD Knife Class
- In this class our students learn to defend and use an edged weapon (knife) within the JKD structure and philosophy. Through drills, attribute training, and knife sparring our students become aware of the dangers and realities of weapons.

- JKD Trapping / Grappling Class
-
The student will participate in this class to become comfortable
in this aspect of fighting. Our trapping class is based on principals
taught by Bruce Lee. Sensitivity drills are emphasize to improve our trapping skills. Trapping can lead us to take downs and grappling. Students are taught about positions of fighting when on the ground. We look at what a grappler would do in these situations and then break it down with a JKD eye giving students a better understanding of what to do and more importantly, what not to do on the ground.

- JKD Tool Development Class
-
In this class footwork is emphasized and its relationship to kicking, punching, trapping, and grappling. Proper body mechanics are also explained so that we can begin to understand the most efficient way to use our tools and to limit our opponents tools. As Bruce Lee stated, if you understand motion, you don't need style.

- Little Dragons (4-6 years) & Young Dragons Gung Fu (7-12 years)
-
Parents can take comfort in the fact that with Jeet Kune Do, their children are studying a form of self-defense that really works. Too often youngsters find out too late that the art they are practicing has little or no "real world" application. Don't have your child step onto today's streets armed with yesterday's methods. Jeet Kune Do is concerned solely with what works.
At the same
time your child is developing such physical skills as coordination, reflexes and balance, they are also developing positive personality traits such as discipline, self-esteem, confidence, compassion and good work habits. With physical skills as a base, your child will develop the confidence to use psychological and sociological self-defense skills which enable him or her to deal with the fears of everyday life. Instead of reacting to conflicts in a confrontational manner, they will seek to resolve them peacefully, using "the art of fighting without fighting."
